EMC Collard in her studio in Frankfurt

EMC Collard studied in London at the Slade School of Fine Art under Jenny Saville and Andrew Stahl and completed her studies with Master in Painting at the Royal College of Arts under David Rayson in 2006. In 2007-08 she co-curated the exhibition series ‘divination’ in Hamburg, Paris and London. Since then, she has been exhibiting internationally, among others since 2020 as part of the BLOOM series in the Frankfurt area, at GSL Projekt (Berlin), New Now art space (Frankfurt), Kühlhaus (Berlin), &Gallery (Kōchi, Japan), Artecommunications (Venedig) and RetroArts (Lahore). She lives and works in Frankfurt am Main. In my artistic practice I am interested in aspects of narrative, material, and craft. I playfully explore these fields in various series and projects that I view as conceptually intertwined. An important strand of my painterly work revolves around the thematic complex flower/beauty/romanticism - growth/danger/disgust. Remembered or imagined plants, often shown in close-up, are the protagonists of these series titled “a genealogy of plants that stand in the shade at night (g.p.t.s.t.s.n.)” and “smol plant gods”. My “splash/strata” works look at the materiality of paint and random patterns created by liquid. Since 2020 I have further been working on “A Fine Film of Fuzz” an online picture book about the life of a mosquito.
