Simon Emery and Shane Whitworth founded the Paintbox in 1988. They turned their passion for custom metal fabrication and paintwork into a business. Early days saw them heavily involved with show winning and race Volkswagens. Very quickly they gained a reputation for building Best of Show Volkswagens. They are now one of the most successful Volkswagen body shops worldwide building some of the most imaginative Volkswagens ever to be seen in the world of aircooled VWs. The Jade Green Karmann Ghia, that they worked on for Bernie Newbury has been described as “the best VW to ever come out of this country, winning best-in-show at most of the custom car shows. No other UK show car has won as many awards as this Ghia. Best in Britain trophy was the icing on the cake”

The Paintbox have also been involved with custom bike projects, hot rods, nostalgia race-cars and restorations. Many good painters and restorers have cut their teeth as juniors at The Paintbox Headquarters in Essex.

More recently their passion for custom paint, design and innovation has seen them become involved in a variety of creative projects, art installations, film work and charity art auctions. These projects include working for the Royal College of Art with MA students from both Vehicle Design and Fashion Accessories, painting a flamed egg for the Big Egg Hunt in London, producing a custom painted and gold-leafed crocodile for the Elephant Family and lacquering a giraffe for firstsite in Colchester. Happy Days is their first exhibition.
