Sara Impey

Born lives and works in Essex

Sara is a self-taught quilter, specialising in machine-stitched lettering. She writes her own material, enabling her to play with language in a visual form and use it to comment on social and personal issues

.Her quilts have been exhibited nationally and internationally and she has won many awards. She is a selected mem- ber of the group Quilt Art and an honorary member of The Quilters’ Guild. Her book ‘Text in Textile Art’ will be pub- lished by Anova Books in August 2013.

‘The inclusion of stitched text as a design element as well as a medium of communication has limitless expressive potential. The pleasure of making and the time it takes is very important to me. Although I use contemporary tools and techniques, I still feel close to the tradition of painstaking and time-consuming English hand-pieced patchwork with which I started.’
